Pedigree Dairy Shorthorns

The Dairy Shorthorn is the oldest registered breed of cattle in the UK, with records dating back to the end of the 19th century. Shorthorns are predominantly red, also red and white, and a blend of the two known as roan.

The breed is superior for:

• Excellent mobility
• Excellent milk quality
• Excellent fertility and longevity
• Excellent conversion of forage to milk
• Excellent temperament

The Shorthorn has a strong link to the north-east. It was developed and prolific in the region until the 1960s, when the black and white Holstein arrived and gained favour for its higher yield. While others changed breed, we stayed loyal, believing in quality over quantity.

We do not treat high milk production as the primary goal. We consider the overall condition and quality of the cows more important, and that is reflected in their welfare.

Pedigree Ayrshires

The Ayrshire originated in South West Scotland and was first recorded in the 1870s. Ayrshires can be any shade of red or brown, including mahogany, and white.

The breed is characterised by:

• High quality milk
• Efficient conversion of forage
• Excellent functional type
• Health and freedom from disease

Milk from the Ayrshire, like that from the Dairy Shorthorn, has a high yield of butterfat and protein, contributing to a much sought-after taste.
